There are books called "Matrikel" listing the Jews in Southern Germany who had obtained a right of sojurn in various towns. Their numbers were limited to a quota, and new ones could only obtain the permit if an existing one left, or died.
From those we have gathered the following information.
I am feeling very incompetent at the moment, I do not know how to gather all this into a coherent page which will share the stuff already learned:

We have Merzbach/Merzbacher also in Authenhausen and Burgpreppach, Baumberg / Bamberg

From the Matrikeln I was sent a listing:

15 Scans of pages from the 1813 - 1861 "Juden Matrikel  aus den mittel-Franken"

Family name Personal name Year of birth born in No.
Merzenbecher Abraham Merzbachers Wittwe Haenle 1738 Fuerth 373
Merzbacher Isaac Merzbacher 1757 Baiersdorf 862
Merzbacher Jacob Jopseph 1767 Schwabach 633
Merzbacher Lippmann Fuerth 1799 Fuerth 91
Merzbacher Maier Loew 1807 Baiersdorf 862
Merzbacher Markus Baiersdorf 1807 Nuernberg
Merzbacher Julius 1809 Baiersdorf 900
Merzbacher Abraham 1812 Baiersdorf 898
Merzbacher Max Fuerth 1829 Fuerth 422

We have an "aha" moment now! The Max MERZBACH we have been looking for is listed here - born 1829.

There just HAS to be a connection between the two tribes

We have found a great Merzbacher connections web site at http://www.rijo.homepage.t-online.de/pdf/en_de_ju_sky40407.pdf
